Noah Fernandes Mitochondrial Awareness Day
Today Marks the First-Ever Noah Fernandes Mitochondrial Awareness Day
Today, we are proud to celebrate the first-ever Noah Fernandes Mitochondrial Awareness Day in Massachusetts, a day dedicated to raising awareness of mitochondrial diseases and honoring Noah Fernandes and his remarkable journey. This special day was established through a petition introduced by Representative Antonio F. D. Cabral of New Bedford, Massachusetts, calling for the annual issuance of a proclamation by the Governor to set apart the Friday of the third full week of September for this important cause.
Who is Noah Fernandes?
Noah Fernandes was a brave boy who battled with M.E.L.A.S, a mitochondrial disease, and has inspired not only his family and community but also sparked a statewide efforts to bring attention to these rare and often misunderstood disorders. His story of resilience, strength, and hope serves as a powerful reminder of the challenges faced by those living with mitochondrial diseases and the critical need for increased research, awareness, and support.
What is Mitochondrial Disease?
Mitochondrial diseases are a group of genetic disorders that affect the mitochondria—the powerhouses of our cells responsible for generating the energy needed for our bodies to function. When mitochondria fail, it can affect many different systems of the body, leading to a wide range of symptoms such as muscle weakness, neurological problems, fatigue, and more. These diseases are rare, and because they can vary so widely from person to person, they are often difficult to diagnose and treat.
Noah’s personal journey with mitochondrial disease has highlighted the importance of early detection, proper care, and the continuous search for better treatments. It is through Noah's courage and the advocacy efforts of his family and supporters that today, we can focus on educating others about this life-altering condition.
Representative Cabral’s Advocacy
The establishment of Noah Fernandes Mitochondrial Awareness Day is the result of a petition by Representative Antonio F. D. Cabral, who represents New Bedford. Recognizing the need for awareness and support for families affected by mitochondrial diseases, Representative Cabral introduced legislation (subject to Joint Rule 12) to make this day an annual observance in Massachusetts. Through his leadership and commitment, today marks a pivotal moment in the effort to bring mitochondrial disease to the forefront of public awareness.
A Day of Awareness, Support, and Hope
By recognizing this day, we aim to:
Raise Awareness: Educate the public about mitochondrial diseases, their symptoms, and the challenges patients and families face.
Support Families: Offer resources and support to families affected by mitochondrial diseases, ensuring they have access to the care and information they need.
Encourage Research: Advocate for increased funding and research into mitochondrial diseases, with the goal of developing more effective treatments and, one day, a cure.

Looking to the Future
Noah Fernandes Mitochondrial Awareness Day is more than a tribute to one person’s journey—it is a call to action for all of us. Mitochondrial diseases affect thousands of individuals and their families, yet they remain largely unknown to the broader public. By dedicating this day to awareness, we are taking a significant step toward ensuring that these diseases receive the attention they deserve.
As we move forward, let this day be a reminder of the power of community, advocacy, and hope. Together, we can bring light to mitochondrial diseases, support those affected, and work toward a future where these diseases no longer limit lives.
Thank you to Representative Antonio F. D. Cabral for his tireless advocacy and commitment to this cause, and to Noah whose strength continues to inspire us all.
